Echo and Danga
By Elise Sinclair
Two hundred years ago in the hot deserts of Central Australia there lived an Echidna called Echo that was an odd character with a usually calm disposition. But one day that calm disposition was broken like the walls of an illegally built city dam. This is the story of that day…
That particular summer day in those scorching deserts down under, Echo the Echidna sat sleepily under a salt bush thinking that this boring day, would be just another ordinary boring day in his unusually boring life. Little did he know that he was extremely wrong and that that day would be one of the most exciting days in his unusually boring life! At exactly ten am on the first December Echo and his bush friends heard the rare snorting and clip clopping sound of a camel and thought that they would make the most of this occasion and go out and watch. Oh! How they were surprised to see Asian men riding on top of those startled camels with unusual looking animals trotting happily beside them! The Asians yelled and screamed at the animals and ran off on their camels leaving the panting creatures standing before Echo and Alex the kangaroo. The leader and oldest of the unknown animal group introduced himself as Danga the dingo. Echo the eldest out of Alex and he introduced both of themselves adding the words “We are Aussie Animals.” At the end of his sentence that seemed to leave the ‘dingoes’ dumbfounded. But it soon became clear what the word Aussie meant as the annoyed Echo told them sternly what it meant. Echo was very cranky with these animals for intruding on his own land that had been his land and his land only! So as soon as Danga asked Alex and Echo if he and his gang could stay on his land for a while, Echo went as wild as a desert whirly wind and as angry as a dog without its daily belly rub and screamed “No you filthy animals! Since you have come here all you have done is pant and pant, drop saliva out of your filthy mouths onto my land and speak your native tongue behind my backs and I have had enough!” Echo waddled awkwardly off the scene and didn’t come back for the rest of the afternoon. Danga asked Alex what could have been the problem and Alex replied “This has been Echidna land for a long time and Echo doesn’t like to share.” Danga thanked Alex and went in search of Echo’s house and soon came to the hollow log and said “Dear Echo all I wanted to do was be a friend and I did not know that this was your land, my clan and I will obey your rules and listen to you, please except my offer of friendship, please.” Echo thought for a while and after putting his mind to a test he emerged out of his home and replied to Danga “I am sorry for being so blind and stupid earlier and I also apologise for making you think that I don’t want to be friends, I do so want to be friends. Also we do not have to agree on arrangements because you and I can share this land and you can come and visit me whenever you like!” After that night Danga and Echo were always friends and Echo actually came to the aid of Danga one time but that is another story…
